thinkingParticles' EXPLOSIVE Effects Featured in Hollywood's Latest Blockbuster "White House Down"

"Complexity and Intricate Detailing" offered by thinkingParticlesTM

When it comes to Hollywood, cebas' accomplishments and success stories are endless! The company's latest is of the current box office strong contender –White House Down- where thinkingParticles was used to create and simulate some of the most amazing destruction scenes in the movie.

cebas Visual Technology Inc had the privilege of working with ScanlineVFX in Munich, Germany to make one particular sequence in the movie closer to reality as reality itself!
thinkingParticles provided ScanlineVFX with the flexibility required, creating a seamless yet extremely accurate workflow for the Studio’s FX Supervisor Ivo Klaus who completely perfected the shot.

The visualization of the scene along with its breakdown is too good to not to be explained by the studio! So check out what they had to say about this inspirational work – simply, a work of art!

ScanlineVFX - Munich:

"In the pool shot, the presidential limousine is flying through a line of trees before splashing squarely into the pool. This gave us the wonderful opportunity
to show how the limousine interacts with the tree line in intricate detail.

Simulating such a complex tree interaction is challenging on many levels and after
preliminary RnD on our side we went for thinkingParticles to solve the task.
In addition, we partnered up with Laubwerk, who went out of their way to provide us with tree models customized to our, and the client’s specifications.

The tree model was comprised of about 60,000 individual objects - we began by
separating them into hierarchies from the tree trunk to the branch tips.
Then we pulled the proxy tree hierarchy into thinkingParticles to simulate the
dynamics with the SC Joints system.

We simulated the tree in separate steps and using the cache playback functionality we were able to adapt the simulation to
the slow motion characteristic of the shot.
That way we were able to control exactly where and when the car would collide and
break off parts of the tree.

While the trunk and the branches were cached, the leaves and small twigs were added with an on-the fly simulation. Leaves and twigs would break off when necessary.

For rendering we were able to skin the high-res tree to the proxy objects.

The complex tools and features that thinkingParticles offer were vital in achieving the desired effects in a timely and flexible way."
